WHAT IS SCAR TISSUE MASSAGE THERAPY?

Scar Tissue Massage Therapy is a pain-free, natural method where very gentle techniques are used by applying the fingertips around the scar & massaging to help free the adhesions that can restrict movement.

Motions are slow and light.  It is a way of softening & smoothing out the scar both on and below the surface.  No force is involved, and the treatment is always within your tolerance range.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO GET MASSAGE THERAPY FOR YOUR SCAR?

Think of an iceberg: What we can see on the surface is just the beginning compared to what is unseen below and beyond, and what we perceive to be the boundary of the scar.

Scars can have a negative effect on the nerves, fascia, lymph and muscles, and symptoms can persist long term. Therefore, Scar Tissue Massage Therapy can help in the following areas:

  • Improve the physical appearance, such as texture & colour
  • Help overcome emotional self esteem associated with scars
  • Decrease pain associated with the scar
  • Smooth the surface of the scar
  • Help ease hypersensitivity, burning and itching
  • Ease the discomfort  / restriction in that area
  • Increase blood flow and lymphatic flow
  • Increase joint movement

Although the surface area of the scar does improve in colour and texture – sometimes dramatically – the more positive outcomes have often been internal improvements and increased movement in the area.

HOW SOON SHOULD I RECEIVE TREATMENT TO MY SCAR?

You can start Scar Tissue Massage Therapy from as early as 6 to 8 weeks after your surgery or injury has occurred.

The scar needs to be fully healed over so as not to get any infection and the time for this will vary depending on the individual.  Some people will heal quicker than others, for many different reasons.

Some scars, such as from open heart surgery, will need a much longer time before any treatment can commence, as the bone needs time to heal as well.

Old scars can really benefit from Scar Tissue Massage Therapy. A scar you received as a child that was left untreated, can be improved with the correct treatment many years later.

There is no time limit as to when you can start treating a scar. It’s never too late, as they say.
